Fly Off To The Canaries This Fall

September 27th, 2011

Thinking about a holiday break in the Canaries this fall? These seven Spanish islands are the most popular destination for foreign visitors after Catalonia, and continually deliver fantastic weather all year round as a result of their ideal position.

The largest and best know island is Tenerife, home to the towering Mount Teide, which stands at 3718 metres above sea level creating an unbelievable contrast in temperature between the snowy mountain top and the hot sandy beaches elegantly arrayed along the coastline at sea level. In keeping with the other islands in the Canary islands chain, the south of the island is home to the islands most popular destinations, whilst the north remains cloudier, and this is where the main urban and commercial centres are located.

In comparison Lanzarote is a relatively small island, measuring just 40km by 60km– and on the plus size hasn’t been subjected to the same level of urban or tourist development, so it is a great deal more au natural as they say.

So anyone wanting to really get away from it all in the Canarian archipelago should make a bee-line to Lanzarote, as they will be rewarded with unbelievable landscapes and vistas, especially in the north. Like the neighbouring island of Tenerife you’ll find that the major destinations are nicely situated in the southerly parts of the island and this is pretty much where you’ll find an wonderful range of sensibly priced accommodation; with 1000′s of apartment rentals and Lanzarote holiday villas available for booking.

Of Lanzarote’s two leading holiday resorts Puerto del Carmen is regarded as the most popular, touting plenty of fantastic beaches along with the traditional style of the harbour that’s worth a visit. There are also an abundance of friendly hotels and villas in Puerto del Carmen if you’re looking for somewhere to stay.

Playa Blanca is somewhat smaller and more peaceful and is a warm and friendly, laid back holiday resort which isn’t seen as being night life central as most of the way more lively parts of Lanzarote, instead the main focus here on the whole is retaining the beauty and comfort of its working history. But there is still a broad option of holiday apartments and villas available for long term and short term rental

From the awe-inspiring natural landscapes to the world class beaches, this is unquestionably a travel vacation spot that will almost certainly give you the feeling of wanting more. The memorable appeal of this welcoming island will stay with you forever.

Fiesta Time On Lanzarote

September 15th, 2010

Lanzarote boasts a full calendar of fiestas and festivals that run throughout the year and as result many tourists book accommodation such as Playa Blanca villas to coincide with one or other of these fiestas, for example; New Year, Nuestra Señora del Carmen and San Gines most of which are heavily attended by the locals. It´s always busy on Lanzarote over Christmas and the New Year. And as a result villas in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, the two largest resorts, are usually booked out at this time. As families come to enjoy the spectacle of Dia del Reyes, which takes place on Epiphany, January 5th. This is when the local kids finally get their Christmas gifts, dispensed by three kings on camels who parade through all of the main resorts and towns on the island, dispensing presents. Head for Puerto del Carmen to enjoy one of the best of these processions. So you are planning to book in one of the luxury Puerto del Carmen Villas then book early.

Carnival in the Canaries isn´t as riotous as Rio, but its still a major event. With the island essentially shutting done for a few weeks as the locals prepare to let their hair down before Lent. A traditional fixture in most Catholic countries Carnival on Lanzarote is celebrated on different days around Lanzarote, creating a prolonged rolling celebration. Comprising processions with floats and marching bands that really brings the island to life every February.

Regional autonomy from the Spanish mainland is the occasion for the Dia de Canarias fiesta on 30th May. When Canarians, including all the school children, dress up in traditional costume and lots of local dishes are widely available for visitors to try.

Following hard on the heels of Dia de Canarias is the religious festival of Corpus Cristi. This usually falls at the beginning of June and features the colourful spectacle of salt carpets spread across the pavements and roads of local towns. Teams of residents work out their designs well in advance and dye the salt to be used. Salt was one of the few materials available in such abundance that it could be used to illustrate numerous stories from the Bible.

In September, the highly unique Fiesta of Dolores is a island-wide event which commemorates the miracle which saw the volcanic lava flows halted in their tracks before the village of Mancha Blanca was swallowed whole. Locals dress up in traditional costume and trek across the island on foot to give thanks for this miraculous occurrence. It is regularly attended by thousands of residents.

Uncover the Real Lanzarote

September 2nd, 2010

Package holidaymakers have been visiting the small Canary Island of Lanzarote ever since the 1970´s. When the island first started to appear in the brochures of tour operators in the UK and across Europe. Its popularity sealed by its breathtaking beaches and equally wonderful weather. But this popular destination offers more than sea, sun and sand. As careful development has created a largely unspoilt holiday island.

Just like on Tenerife and Gran Canaria there is a profound north south divide on Lanzarote when it comes to the climate and subsequent tourist development. With the south boasting better weather as a result of the profound microclimate here. Whilst the north is less developed and preferred by the locals as a result.

Over the last decade more and more independent travellers have started to visit Lanzarote. A result of the growth of the internet and the trend to browse and book holidays online. This trend has increased interest in self catering accommodation such as Lanzarote villas and apartments – at the expense of package holiday deals and hotels. With holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen – the islands largest resort – proving very popular with tourists from the UK and Eire.Accommodation details on holiday villas in Playa Blanca can be found here

Outside the three resorts is an island that is full of hidden delights. Some of which don’t even appear on local maps. So it really pays to book a rental vehicle and take some tie to tour around. With the north home to the real authentic heart of Lanzarote.

To connect with the real Lanzarote just drive to the north of Lanzarote and stroll around the incredibly picturesque village of Haria. Which also plays host to a great market every Saturday morning. Haria has been described as the prettiest village on the island – if not the world. And whilst the former is true the latter is something of an exaggeration. Although Haria is a real gem as it is very green and verdant whilst the rest of Lanzarote is arid and dry. A phenomenon that is not all down to Mother Nature as locals here continue to follow a tradition of planting a Canarian palm for every newborn baby in the village. No wonder it has long been described as the Valley of 1000 Palms!

From Haria it is just a short drive to the coastal village of Arrieta. Which is home to one of the few beaches on this side of Lanzarote to have escaped development. Soak up the great views and the sun here from one of the restaurants that are located right on the sand.
