If you’re visiting for the first time, you might want to go to one of these five top destinations.
Nagano
The true haven for skiers in Japan is Hokkaido. Because of its status as a top tourist draw however, it is also understandably packed in winter. Staying in Nagano can also be quite costly. If you’re looking for fine ski slopes and more reasonable resort prices, you might want to take a detour to Nagano instead. You’ll get the same enjoyable snow adventure in Nagano as in Hokkaido but with lower costs and fewer people to fight for a spot on the slopes with.
You might also want to visit Japan on a working holiday visa. In this case, the best choice would truly be Nagano. You get to save a lot here because accommodations, meals and ski passes are free for foreign staff.
Kyoto
History and culture shine brilliantly for the academic tourist in Kyoto. If you want to see actual elements of Japan’s feudal history, you should drop by here first. Many of Kyoto’s historical sites are in good condition because they were never damaged during the war. It still has 17 UNESCO world heritage sites standing proud and strong. These include the Kozan-ji and Tenryu-ji temples to name a few. You’d need a number of days to completely tour the temples.
Okinawa
The places to visit in Japan aren’t restricted to winter resorts and cultural sites. There are also summer destinations that can blow your mind away. There are stretches of sand to sunbather on or clear waters to dive into. If the Caribbean or Hawaii get too crowded, Okinawa is a good alternative.
Tokyo
You should never miss out on Tokyo because it has the best of everything. This is the melting pot where both modern influences and cultural heritage fuse into a strong but enchanting mix. This is where you can shop until you drop or dine in world class establishments after visiting culturally rich places like the Imperial Palace and the Asakusa Kannon Temple.
Osaka
If Tokyo is a bit too flurried for you, you can always take another route to Osaka. Do take note that this is very much a progressive city and a top destination for Japan jobs for foreigners. What you can appreciate most about it though is that it isn’t as fast paced as Tokyo. You also get more cultural exposure when you go around the city. Some cultural and historical places to check out include the Osaka Castle and the Sumiyoshi Shrine.
