Best Times For Bird Watching

A healthy life list of birds sighted is always good should you be getting into the hobby of birding, or bird watching. Put another way, you will need to know the best times for bird watching.

Which Bird Watching Time Is The Best?

You have to admit, there is a grain of truth if somebody tells you that the chase makes everything more exciting. And if birding is your thing, the very fact that youre adding more entries into that life list of yours means that you are indeed enjoying the chase. Simply put, there are good, okay and great times to seek out sightings. Understand these times and you will be on your way to some excellent sightings.

Many people make the mistake of confusing a birds behavior with behaviors that are more common with humans. Birds may appear to react as such, but they are not following typical human behavior. Birds are like other animals, they react to stimuli and rely on instinct. This means it is foolhardy to assume they will follow the same schedule as we do. There may be similarities in their actions, true that, but few and far in between.

For sure youve heard of the saying the early bird gets the worm. Its more than just a tired cliche meant for habitual latecomers. Most species of birds tend to be active early in the morning, much as humans are unless I havent had my coffee yet. Naturally you cant expect a bird to have a craving for a cup of Joe, but this holds true – they too crave breakfast in the morning. Plan on heading out early if you want to sight a particular species in an active phase.

Strangely enough, its not a good idea to go birding in the middle of the day. You may sometimes have a better view of the birds, but most species are inactive during these times. A better time to catch them is in the late afternoon when activity picks up before the onset of evening.

Undoubtedly, you are thinking of a variety of species that do not fit within this general guideline and you are correct to do so. Different species of birds have various schedules and activity patterns. Perhaps earlier you were thinking of owls, which are the best example of birds having an unusual activity pattern – they spend their evenings up and about and sleep when the sun is up. That being said, you have to be informed about how the species you wish to sight lives its average day, then schedule your viewing habits accordingly.

As we mentioned earlier, early morning and late afternoon are the best times to arrange your bird watching schedule. To avoid the occasional disappointment, make sure to research the specific tendencies of any particular bird you wish to observe.
